Summer Course on Tropical Biodiversity: Multidisciplinary Approach to Fight Natural Loss

Introduction

The Indonesian archipelago has around 133 hectares of tropical forest, from Sumatra to Papua Island. These forests are significant because of their ability to serve as ecological products and service providers as well as cultural icons. To preserve human welfare and prosperity, it is therefore vital to responsibly maintain and manage these forests.

Sustainable forest management is critical to reducing land degradation and biodiversity loss, according to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) number 15, ” protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss”.

Tropical rainforests are intriguing places to understand the processes that occur in a natural ecosystem. The direct experience of exploring tropical rainforests will broaden the participants’ understanding of life and nature.

This course intends to provide biodiversity concepts and strategy to conserve biodiversity in tropical area, especially in Indonesia. Lecture methods include classroom lectures, workshops, discussions of biodiversity issues, an industrial visit, and a field excursion. In addition, participants will have an opportunity to visit industry utilizing non-timber forest products to reduce waste from non-degradable materials. This program covers the general ideas of biodiversity, valuation of biodiversity, new issues from convention of biodiversity, human and diversity relationships, threats, and conservation approaches to support sustainable life in the biosphere. Courses and lectures in this program will be delivered by internationally recognized lecturers and professionals.
